Meme showing futuristic advanced society indicating this could be us if we fix and fund transit in Illinois

πŸšπŸš† Public transit is one of the few ways Illinois families can beat rising costs. It saves riders thousands each year on gas, parking, car repairs, and insurance.

We need to fix and fund it. Tap here to contact your legislators: https://activetrans.quorum.us/campaign/136638/

I'm so proud of everyone from my old neighborhood of Rogers Park in Chicago. I see what you have been and are doing. I am so proud of how organized the community is and how much more so everyone is becoming. It is inspiring. Just one example... And this is something EVERYONE can do. Everyone.

That's it. Thanks again for following.

I’m out, I'm sore. I'll have more later, but right now I have to say a couple of things. First, walking out of there to learn about the kindness, support, and quick action from so many of you all has meant the world to me, my wife, and co-founder, Raven. Thank you.

You turn off autoplay by going into your Settings > Content & Media and then unchecking the Autoplay videos and GIFS box.

You carefully consider Hot Takes by not posting them and instead seeking out actual news.

And you provide links, and, if needed, content warnings.

I finished "Parable of the Sower" by Octavia Butler. (From the library!) I loved Butler's prose and worldbuilding, but I hate how prescient it was/is.

The cheapest way requires more time, but if you smother your lawn with a tarp for a few weeks and then replace the ground with seeded groundcover. If I were going to do that I'd start in August, so your seeds have a chance to root before winter. That's the cheapest option of all.

I killed my lawn in 2020 with a ton of cardboard boxes, a few hundred dollars worth of fresh topsoil, and about $30 in seeds. I've spent probably an equal amount on bare-root plants and seeds. It's a fragrant oasis with milkweed, rattlesnake master, mountain mint, violets, and dogwoods, to start.

Hate mowing and endless watering? Rip out your lawn and replace it with something more wild Native landscaping requires minimal maintenance, benefits the environment and, with a bit of acceptance, can be a thing of beauty.

chicago.suntimes.com/environment/...

I love this article about replacing your lawn with native plants, but I do take issue with one thing: that it could cost thousands of dollars to replace your lawn.

You can do it yourself for way, way less. Cheap as free, even.

I also enjoyed @trapperhaskins.bsky.social "Crooked Old River," a tale of one guy's desire to build an old boat, and paddle it from the mouth of the Mississippi, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. The story rolls at the pace of the river itself, first slow and leisurely, then fast and messy.

I want to call attention specifically to "Diana of the Dunes: The True Story of Alice Gray" a woman whose probable genius was restricted by the the times her gender allowed for her. So she fucked off to go live in the still-wild Indiana Dunes. I love her and want to be her. Truly an icon.
