...is the new...
"It's free, how are they going to be around a long time?"
So many reminders of the ZIRP startup era these days.

Six, small, one-day events, from a travelling conference, cheap tickets, focus on creating connections.
I told Jim: my vote is for Toronto next year 🤞
I wasn’t supposed to speak English like an English-native.
I wasn’t supposed to write code like an engineer.
It wasn’t like either was a conscious goal. It’s not like I actually achieved either if they were.
But it’s often fun to learn new details you didn’t pick up the last round.
If someone both buys your product (or service) and tells others about it, our product solves two problems.
People pay you reputation payments too.

I've been speaking with dev friends using AI for coding.
Top "uh huh!" for me is this:
Time "in the zone" is down compared to before.
Same with you?
So that Superman movie huh!?
$10 that they tried to get Lady Gaga into that role next to Bradley Cooper.
There’s something here that feels like delegating to a machine in general.
LLMs have no skin in the game.
We'll be hosting small regional ruby conferences in Chicago, Atlanta, and New Orleans in September. Tell your friends!

We're out of Zero Interest Rates, which is great,
but the low-cost vibe is still alive.
The tweaks Apple is making to make Liquid Glass feel just right seem, to us who are watching, like a dead-end uphill mess.
That is, until you remember that they made the only trackpad integration that’s worth using. (Still? Haven’t kept up on the Windows/Chrome OS side.)
In this Smarter Every Day video, Dustin shares this on U.S. manufacturing capacity:
(Paraphrasing) "We used to make the foreign country operate machines we invented. Now, it's the opposite."
Let's remember this with LLMs and dev work.
AI is an offshoring event.

If you're going to be creative anyway, might as well make it an urgency.

I liked it. Your presentation was dense, as I expected.
Appreciated getting a few tips from you that are a bit of a relief for scale anxiety. For example, I didn't know about ANY + ARRAY (even if it's in the Rails guides).
There are so many things I _feel_ are dangerous/inadequate for scale in AR.
With LLMs making leetcode and other whiteboard problems trivial, software hiring IMO should shift towards establishing taste, which LLMs absolutely do not have.
"What do you hate about ActiveRecord? What would you change about Rails if you could?" Review this PR, etc.

I’m a fan of:

Just bought a domain.
It's a .app
I am relieved I got it.
Why didn't I buy it before?

I didn't really know about the active-hash gem before and now it has become one of my favorite gems. If you need an ActiveRecord kind of class but not backed up by a database table. For example Countries or in my case a list of integrations.
You can simply add them in a yml file like this.

Job well done!
I appreciate most his modelling of how to act when things are scary:
"Do you know what I like about comedy? You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time—of anything. If you're laughing, I defy you to be afraid."
