YouTube video by New America Open Technology Institute Lightning Talks: โ€œReconnecting Public Media to the Publicโ€

Have five minutes? Our own @joshpkramer.bsky.social has a lightning talk on Public Spaces Incubator and reconnecting public media to the public:

โ€œWhen you give up on hosting the conversation, and you cede it to these companies, what happens when they go crazy?โ€

In "Fish: a tap essay", Robin Sloan writes about how one way to show love on the internet, as opposed to just โ€œliking,โ€ is by revisiting things.

I just returned to one of my fav spots in DC: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Saw egrets, herons, osprey, and many lotuses. ๐Ÿชท

In a @newpublic.org fav, "Fish: a tap essay", Robin Sloan writes: โ€œto love is to return.โ€

What (IRL or online) do you love to return to?

James Gunn seems to have learned a lesson from the Raimi Spider-Man movies: show regular people reacting to disaster and the emotions of the danger hit so much harder.

I keep thinking about that woman holding her turtle.

It's frustrating that ANC meetings are so long, and the minutes are approved months later.

However, new AI tools make it much easier to stay on top of what's happening in these meetings. I took the YouTube transcript and meeting agenda and created a summary:

docs.google.com/.../1TIF.../....

An illustrated poster drawn by me that depicts 12 species of colorful sea slugs and nudibranchs found on the pacific coast of California. They come in a rainbow of colors and shapes and are illustrated on a light blue background. Numbers are assigned to a key that has the names of the species.

I agree ultimately, that too many people interpret a cover as an aggro takedown when it's often more like, "hey, isn't this interesting?"

I'm on board with digging this deeply and engaging with art on its own terms. I am also surprised you didn't take on the context of what a "NYer cover" means and the overall genre. There's a rich tradition here going back a hundred years now.

There's something about the idea of two billionaires sniping at each other from, as the NYT put it, "their own social media platforms" -- that is, the platforms they each own -- that encapsulates something deeply deeply off about the current era

Annotating the tech references in Mountainhead "What we have is toxic, not terminal"

You can enjoy Mountainhead without a deep dive into the tech world its enmeshed in, but thereโ€™s a lot of fun stuff to unpack. So letโ€™s dive!

Also, I offer my guesses for who everyone is supposed to be in real life.
