Yeah, my mileage is varying a lot it turns out.
I have to go look every so often to get a feel for the AI hype sphere. Every time feels like I’m taking psychic damage, little numbers appearing above my head, video game style.
“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”
This always frustrates me whenever I run across mention of “the trolley problem”. The trolley cases aren’t themselves the “problem”, everyone completely misuses the term.
I appreciate an unexpected Symphony X reference. Thank you.
On the topic of current events.
I’m a member! We restarted our chapter here recently.
That’s all horrifying. I hope there is some way we can find to resist this kind of thing as a broader community, and provide support for you all to do so.
GM: Charisma check.
Mamdani: [rolls natural 20]
GM: that’s a d6 how did you
Mamdani: [direct to camera] Did you know you can check out board games at your local public library? 😊
Obviously writing a philosophy PDF that pleases the idiosyncratic tastes of 17 specific people in Ithaca, NY is the meaning of life.
Sounds like anecdata. Come back when you have an RCT supporting this claim.
It must not taste like this to people who like it. But to me, it tasted like rotten garbage. And the after taste lasted for a really long time.
Don’t do it. You were warned!
But have you had Durian?
"We’ve already won. The reward is right now, this moment. The reward is watching your city organize in hyperlocal networks of compassion because tens of thousands of people simultaneously and instinctively felt the urge to help their neighbors get by" www.nytimes.com/2026/02/18/o...
Every day we drift further…
Not the most pressing issue in the world, but I appreciated this clever and well written skewering of University admin priorities.

Don’t look into it, but it’s all just normal, non-fascism stuff going on around here.
And you’re right, we could just argue about it in person…
Of course, VE and testimonial knowledge have a difficult relationship, admittedly.
This might be right for some of the most important philosophical questions. Or for deep scientific understanding. Is that what you’re thinking? But I do think there is testimonial knowledge, and that getting it about less central questions can sometimes help our thinking even about the deep stuff.
And if you are fooled by that often enough, you lose the skills for the real deal.
But what is worrisome about AI is that it threatens to undercut our ability to do the understanding part. It makes it too easy to get answers, and then get explanations that give the *feeling* of understanding to people.
I don't think this is a disagreement, but I think there are times where it can be helpful to just know an answer to a question. Sometimes we just want that knowledge. Sometimes it even helps the process of understanding to have that knowledge in advance.
I hope you all have fun! (The black metal is definitely more my speed…)
