My PhD extension was approved last November, but now my funding has stopped, and I’ve been logged out of the university system. Independent scholar mode it is! Not ideal, but the dissertation journey continues.

Last chapter revised and submitted: 18,000 words trimmed to 15,000. It’s the first chapter I wrote, reflecting my early struggles—balancing case details with theory, amplifying interviewee voices while finding my own.

I'm curious, what are other PhD experiences like regarding funding and access during the dissertation writing/defense period in other countries?

Strange PhD experience in the Netherlands: My contract and university email access are ending in January when project funding ends, even though I'm still finalizing my dissertation and have my defense coming up.

Some places cheer to welcome the New Year. In Taiwan, people cry their eyes out | CNN Hundreds showed up at the park to cry, laugh, drink, sing, dance, chat and blow off steam, transforming the flashmob-style gathering into a colorful spectacle to usher in 2024.

I think the success of this New Year’s crying event in TW isn’t just about love for Vive L’Amour (though I adore it!) or Yang Kuei-mei’s amazing performance. It’s about creating a space to cry, reflect, or feel dejected—so liberating when the world tells you to celebrate with cheers and countdowns!
