Like many people in the Charlottesville area who are connected to UVA (my spouse is library staff), I have complicated feelings about Jim Ryan’s leadership at UVA. But nothing good can possibly come of this, for UVA, for Charlottesville, for the country, and for democracy.

I was in the garden too. I came in just as the fireflies started lifting from the grass. And then I came in and saw the news.

Nothing this government does feels like a surprise, and still the news feels like a crushing weight. It’s hard to hold the beauty of this world and the cruelty side by side.
