Black and white photo cropped to an oval shape. A fluffy white kitten looks at the camera seeming a little peeved and blearily like he was just woken up for this. The word “Baby.” is superimposed in white text on the bottom.

He is Baby. Postcard from my collection, ca. 1900.

I haven’t posted in two months. I’ve been sobering up since October and am, finally, proudly sober. It’s been an arduous process, and thankfully, it’s over so I can turn my mind to better things—writing horror. With any luck, I’ll publish something this year. I’ve missed creating.

Reproduction of excerpt from Timothy Snyder's book ON TYRANNY:

"1. Do not obey in advance.
Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do."

As well-meaning publishers try to navigate the coming storm of state laws against diversity, I hope they'll consider Timothy Snyder's Rule #1 (from his slim book ON TYRANNY).

Yeah I was concerned because of how great the first one was, but really liked the direction they took it in with all the documentary stuff.

Totally. It’s probably my favourite found footage movie. I also love the sequel, have you seen it?

Young man wearing a beanie and glasses. His glasses have steamed up from drinking tea from a strawberry-shaped mug.

I have immediately discovered a flaw.

I am a glasses guy now! 🤓 Fingers crossed they do the trick and I can work without getting a headache or going out of focus.

A shopping cart full of indoor plants.

I went a little house plant crazy today. An occupational hazard of going to Bunnings on my day off. 🪴

Grandiloquent Word of the Day -
Sepia-toned graphic in baroque Victorian typeface with pen-and-ink drawing of a three men staring at each other. The man in the middle has his hands to his head and has the expression of shock on his face.

Revenant [REH-veh-nent]
(n.)
-A person who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead
-One that returns after death or long absence

Used in a sentence:
“The revenant emerged from the shadows whispering malevolent curses from beyond the grave.”

A straw octopus A straw bird; pelican, maybe? A straw cat A straw horse, maybe dragon?

Every year around the rice harvest, art students in Japan’s Niigata prefecture, repurpose the crop’s leftover straw, or wara, into mammoth characters for the Wara Art Festival.

If you are an artist, or know someone who is, then you know how much love they put into their craft.
This UK artist has been battling a US company who tanked their work. After years, they've almost prevailed! If you can help out, please do! Alex Norris - creator of Oh No Comics

Excellent day for me; I collect UglyDolls, and they're bringing them back in 2024, the original line and hopefully some new ones. Coincidentally, this is also why my husband is having a bad day.

32 degrees outside, 22 inside without needing to turn on the A/C. Gotta love old, thick-walled houses. Especially during Australian "Springtime," when Mother Nature turns on the big oven.

A graphic called A Reader's Guide To Alan Baxter showing the covers of all my books and how, in some cases, they go together. There are 32 book covers shown, covering novels, novellas, collections, non-fiction and 8 books co-written with David Wood.

Friends, I got permanently suspended from Twitter for being mean to rich people and the place is dying anyway. I'm trying hard to rebuild something here, because this place is cool. Please help spread the word that I'm around. I write dark books and I think you'll like them. www.alanbaxter.com.au
