God it was unbelievable watching Japan deliver the highest score ever seen in the Free Skate, especially after their heartbreaking performance in the Short Program. Just unflinching perfection from start to finish.
Congrats to Japan on winning their first Figure Skating Pairs gold!

A reporter called to ask me about Jeremy Carl's nomination, given that he's from Montana and apparently wrote some wild shit about me in 2023.
I'll echo my comments to the reporter here: I think he'd fit in well with the Trump administration, given that it's filled entirely with nazis & pedophiles.

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them

Update: I finished my first 2 books of the year!
On Tyranny felt like a pamphlet warning me of a bomb that was already mid-explosion, which is terrifying.
The Emperor's Soul was solid. Syntactically simple, but philosophically enjoyable. It makes me curious how longer Sanderson books will be.

Every year I that have served in the legislature, Republicans have attacked the rights of trans people & the LGBTQ community. If this is the so-called Utah Way, I'm done with it. I'm proud to be endorsed by @zoandbehold.bsky.social, who knows what it means to stand up against bullies. Thanks, Zooey.

That's *really* tough to tackle as a state legislator, but I am ruminating on what can be done.
I'm curious, if you had your choice, would you rather:
(a) Be able to opt-out of any of your work being used in the training of AI
(b) Be compensated for the use (e.g. royalties)
(c) Ban AI entirely

We're looking at the impacts right now in Montana. Lots of conversation about data centers here because Montana has more land/water than most states, and fewer people than most states.
So there's a lot of discussion, including the environmental impacts, economic impact, tribal rights, etc.

Sometimes that means pushing back against things that take jobs, but sometimes it manifests as uplifting other industries, increasing access to services, etc.)
It's complicated. But I am weighing heavily the way companies are using AI as justification for shrinking the number of employees they pay.

True. And also, I remind myself that I'm can't take a universal position against "things that take jobs." That could quickly spiral into anti-environmentalism or Luddite-esque policy.
My focus is on how to improve people's quality of life, how to expand freedoms, how to protect against bad actors

Montana's legislature only meets in odd-numbered years (we're one of only 4 states to meet every other year).
So I have all of 2026 to research and plan.

One of my 2026 political goals is to become deeply knowledgeable about every aspect of Artificial Intelligence.
It's development, trajectory, limitations, impact on other research, it's economic/cultural impacts.
Montana's legislature meets again in 2027; I want to be ready to make good policy.
