i just had a prophetic vision that the new buzzword for all the guys currently obsessed with "taste" is gonna be "appetite".

Eg "In the anhedonic post-ozempic era, the only thing that matters is obsessively discerning, high-agency appetite"!!! Sorry for writing that sentence!!

The book House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski sits on a side table with a lamp on top of it

I fear this was my Infinite Jest (now in use as Y2K lamp holder at my parents house)

If someone says they’re “noticing” something these days it is either a dog whistle that they’re a conspiracy theorist/antisemite or indicates they’re a moron about to reinvent an existing field of study.

Sorry to that word

Not sure what answer you want and why you're being so aggressive here - if this is terrain you feel like you have ownership of then you're welcome to it. No more cheeky QTs from me! I cede my ground to the professionals 🫡

Their stores have the most disingenuous and cringe deployment of the “Judd Furniture book on display + wafts of limited edition Japanese incense” retail genre I’ve ever seen. BARELY a step up from “curly mustache barber that gives you whisky”

Golden Pager (Timing Is Everything) Netanyahu gave his buddy Trump a golden pager trophy—Kelly Pendergrast explains how the brutal handbuzzer joke works.

My own contribution to the discourse (a full year ago - aka ancient history in USA fash slop years) was on the heinous "golden pager" gifted to Trump by Netanyahu (remember that??) - a cruel gag presented as a fugly corporate trophy. Still worth reading imo!!

Toward an Understanding of Fascist Aesthetics, Part I The question of whether or not we are living “in fascism” is, I’ve always thought, a kind of useless one, mostly because history does not go backwards: today there is not a “return” to fascism so much...

Just subscribed to @flaminghydra.com so I can read this @katewagner.wehwalt.net piece.

Lots of good twt/bsky threads out there on contemp fascist aesthetics & some longer form work, but I'm so stoked for Kate's series bc this shit is RANCID and needs mucho analysis

Selective Service System (mentioned below) had a huge impact on me when I first watched it.

Made by SF State students, it documents the lengths some young people went to avoid the draft, the violence of those (these) times, and the way wars makes losers of us all.

Screenshot from "Selective Service System" (1970) directed by Warren Haack. We see a man, filmed from above, sitting on a sofa with his feet up on a chair. He holds a shotgun in his left hand and it is pointing approximately in the direction of his left foot. Screenshot from "Inextinguishable Fire" (1969), by Harun Farocki. The black and white image shows the arms and torso of a man sitting behind a desk with sheets of paper in front of him. His left hand is stretched out on the desk in front of him, and with his right hand he touches a cigarette to his bare left forearm. Screenshots from "Crossroads" (1976) by Bruce Connor. A grid of four black and white screenshots show moments from an underwater nuclear explosion at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.

I pretty much think the semi-apocryphal Truffaut truism that "it is impossible to make an anti-war film" is correct when it comes to hollywood narrative cinema.

However, it is 100% possible to make an anti-war experimental film. Time to tap back in at the cinephile factory, friends.
