like industrial manufacturing plants are built *where there is infrastructure built for industrial manufacturing*, whereas data centers are built where they can parasitise residential infrastructure, or further exploit dwindling groundwater reserves

the problem with data center water usage is that they exist in physical places and place an outsized amount of stress on local infrastructure, or have been built in places that are already water scarce

1. those are objects with actual utility
2. water is a localised issue, and equating globalised supply chains like smartphones or textiles to localised data centers is a category error
