He’s not “trying to be clever”

It’s a basic piece of skill which he executes without issue 99 times out of 100

Unfortunately on this occasion the turf gave way, completely beyond his control

This “keep it simple”, “don’t try anything clever” spiel is just a big dog-whistle

He does go back, tries to flick it away and loses his footing on a greasy surface and gets absolutely eviscerated by fans

United did this when we first signed Maguire but as soon as they introduced VAR we got penalised every time anyone breathed on a defender, so it neutralised the threat

For some reason the FA have decided not to referee Arsenal at corners, so they can score as many as they like
