Episode 34 – Please (Part One)
We go back to PSB Year Zero — the moment Neil & Chris met and began reshaping pop. Five key Please players, the origin stories of West End Girls & Opportunities, plus our first ever In Depth competition.

Correct!
Tom is on there but not in that pic…
Not quite right with these two though
Thanks for getting involved Rich! You are right with JJ - he produced the first version of Opportunities before Stephen Hague got his hands on it
When Neil first met Bobby O in New York in 1983 at Apple Jack Diner, he ordered a cheeseburger and a slice of carrot cake - 43 years later and the cheeseburger is still on the menu.
Ep34 is all about the origins of Please: the places, the people, the stories and the songs. Tune in from Friday!
Please turns 40 this month. In 1986 I was 10, Graham was 16, and West End Girls was number one!
Graham got Please for his birthday; I was busy playing pool and riding my bike, oblivious to all things pop.
What were you doing in 1986? Tell us below.
Our special Please episode lands Friday!
Season Six begins this Friday - and we’re kicking things off with a two‑part 40th anniversary celebration of Please.
Camden 8, carrot cake, calculators, kebabs and 10 cassette classics - the story starts this week.
Plus… watch out for news of our first ever In Depth competition!
Huge thanks to Graham for coming out to support my son Ed’s band last night. Mariana might not be very Pet Shop Boys… but they are very good! 🤘
If you fancy discovering something new, hop over to their Instagram and give them a like or a follow 😊

In Depth is back! We’ve recorded a limited season of episodes to coincide with an extraordinary burst of PSB activity, culminating in April’s landmark Obscure concerts. Join us from 13/03 as we celebrate these shows, together with the release of Volume, and the 40th anniversary of Please.
❤️ Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️
Whether it’s a catastrophe or a bourgeois construct, Pet Shop Boys have much to say about love. And so does the In Depth podcast - why not listen back to our Love episode from last year?

There’s no new In Depth today, so why not instead take a listen to our Christmas special from two years ago? Channeling the spirit of Christmas 1987 - and counting down PSB’s top 10 festive moments - it’s one of our favourites.
Merry Christmas! 🎄

To celebrate Attitude magazine’s 20th anniversary in 2014, Pet Shop Boys created an advert dressing the Electric sleeve in Pride colours - a nod to the publication where, in 1994, Neil first spoke openly about his sexuality.
An extract from that landmark interview is available here: tiny.cc/ubkw001
In episode 33 we discuss Pet Shop Boys’ September 2013 performance at the Volkswagen Group evening ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Six episodes in a season, pretty much. It might not sound like it, but that’s three months’ work!
Graham and Chris go full‑throttle at Electric — the album that blasted PSB back into banging‑and‑lasers mode. An A–Z of influences, chaos, joy, x2 origins, listener memories and more. A celebration of Pet Shop Boys at their most liberated.
