Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Fred Hutch is dedicated to the elimination of cancer and related diseases as causes of human suffering and death.

My awesome colleague, @yarimura.bsky.social, is recruiting a postdoc to start at the end of 2026 or early 2027! His lab uses cryo-EM to uncover structural basis of key chromatin events using native complexes isolated from human cells or Xenopus egg extracts!

I was sad to learn that my postdoctoral mentor, David Botstein, died yesterday. I started with David as a postdoc in 1998, and he had a profound effect on both my life and scientific career. He was a giant in the field of genetics, making seminal contributions in both yeast and human genetics. 1/

“Fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone,” Dr. Kornbluth wrote.

‘A whole body of health-equity research is being disappeared’ — why I resigned from the NIH As federal support vanishes for research addressing the root causes of health disparities in the United States, we are left with a dangerous void and an urgent need to rethink science funding.

Excellent piece from a former NIH colleague and #BethesdaDeclaration co-signer.

She highlights the ongoing censorship at NIH and calls for the following three actions:

Mmm- I asked in my browser what one dollar of Apple stock purchased in 1999 would be worth today. The AI answer - “
If you had $1 in Apple stock bought in 1999, it would be worth approximately $1.04 trillion today based on the average annual growth rate of Apple's stock” real answer ~ $160

16-Year-Old Cooper Lutkenhaus Shocks the Nation and Qualifies for Worlds The rising high school junior placed second in the 800-meter final with an unbelievable PR of TK seconds.

Holy cow this was an amazing race at Hayward at @uoregon.bsky.social He started running 3 years ago — as a 7th grader - and now owns the U16 and U18 world records and I think the 18th fastest 800 of all time by anyone. He starts 12th grade in the Fall.

I always find survey results like this staggering (almost to the point of unbelievability).

The US was spending around 1% of its federal budget on foreign aid.

The average guess among 1,000+ surveyed Americans was 26%.

15% thought it was over half of the budget (?!)

How to Dismantle a Democracy, Legally The unitary executive theory is a masterclass in autocratic legalism.

The "unitary executive theory" is a fancy name for a strategy used by authoritarians worldwide, rebranded for the US. It’s a legal blueprint for a power grab, and my new article explains how it turns the law itself into a tool for undermining democracy:

Reflecting on how lucky I am to have watched hands the best women’s 5k of ever yesterday. Beatrice Chebet breaks the world record and is the first woman under 14min. And Ngetich and Tsegay are right there with what would have been world records only recently. And Chebet’s beautiful and awesome kick.

So irresponsible and cruel. The bill in the Senate will take money and healthcare from poor and middle class Americans to pay for even more tax breaks to the rich and to pile more debt on our children (and us frankly). It’s important to provide a clear message about the truth of what is happening.
