Canada still claims to be a “world leader” on ghost gear, but the Liberals let funding lapse in 2024. As I told the National Observer, “It was one of the most effective ocean protection programs Canada’s ever created.” Ghost gear isn’t niche, it’s about safety, food security & real action.
So what is the solution? A public health approach, not a legal or capitalist one

AND the only reason unregulated drugs are so dangerous is BECAUSE they are illegal
www.amsterdam.nl/dealingwithd...
for no reason at all, good time to remind everyone that the ONLY reason some psychoactive substances are illegal is to DO RACISM

“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.”
#Copenhagen chose. They keep choosing to go further each year.
“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”
“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.”

NEW: “The transformations that Paris made work better for everyone, including drivers.” I’m interviewed for this @politico.eu @victorglaf.bsky.social article on Paris Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s truly remarkable city-building legacy. @carlosmorenofr.bsky.social is quoted along with many mayors.
Urban design to nurture life of all kinds. You don't get that when you prioritize cars.
“We’ve been designing downtowns to virtually repel children, & then saying, ‘See, families don’t want to live downtown,’” @brenttoderian.bsky.social says. “We’ve been creating the perfect self-fulfilling prophecy.”
Struggling downtowns look to lure new people. I’m among those interviewed in this.
Here’s a good question — why is riding a bicycle in the city turning into [actually, being deliberately turned into] a culture war?
Read this @momentummag.bsky.social article.
It doesn’t need to be this way. It’s just smarter transportation that makes urban movement easier for EVERYONE.
Just a friendly reminder that Massachusetts feeds its schoolkids for free by taxing millionaires and there have been zero negative effects from this policy.
NEW from @eroston.bsky.social:
The US is already spending nearly $1 trillion every year on climate damages — we're not even officially at 1.5C of heating yet — according to a @bloomberglp.bsky.social analysis.

A) Makary is lying. Despite rampant misinformation about COVID vaccines they retain well above 70% public support…far more than this administration can say.
B) If people “don’t want COVID boosters” they don’t have to get COVID boosters. Why do these dweebs oppose informed consent & the free market?
I’d love to see their data! Cause this has been studied by actual scientists & the decline in American life expectancy has ACTUALLY been driven largely by:
-guns
-illicit drugs
-COVID
-lack of healthcare access
And our horrible maternal mortality rates are driven by abortion restrictions & racism.
The planet lost a record amount of forests last year, largely because of fires around the world, data shows. Researchers estimated that the world lost the equivalent of 18 soccer fields of forested land every minute.

The House and Senate both voted to loosen regulations on air pollutants like dioxin and mercury, which are associated with higher cancer risk.
Got some (liquid) fentanyl sprayed on me this week by a colleague medicating a badly-injured patient, and didn’t die or even have any effects. My urine (most sensitive way to test for fentanyl exposure - I have tons of test strips at home cause I give them out lol) was also negative for fentanyl :/
These children suffered horribly before they died. And statistics like this completely exclude the many who “survived” after suffering horribly, many with permanent harms.
100 men vs. 1 gorilla?
How about the working class against the oligarchy?
The upward redistribution of wealth over the past 50 years has shifted $80 trillion from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%.
This is the real fight we need to be talking about.

⚡️ Electricity is electricity.
The final product of a solar farm or coal plant is identical.
If we prefer coal & gas — despite being dirtier — because they “create more jobs,”
can we just admit fossil fuel power stations are a
planet-destroying make-work project?

At this juncture I’d like to point out:
* we’re on the brink of a golden age of medical healing
* there’s enough money in the world to solve every problem in the world
* a united approach could stop the climate crisis
But a small group of sociopaths seeking personal power are going to throw it away.
Carl Sagan when asked, "Are you a Socialist?"
Oh I haven’t been on there in ages. Can you message me here now?
Stopping deforestation is one of the largest and most effective climate solutions. It can reduce global emissions by ~10-12%, equivalent to the entire U.S. economy.
It could be a powerful "emergency brake" on climate.
So why aren't we paying more attention to it?

From Ontario to Texas, every #measles infection is a preventable tragedy, by @picardonhealth.bsky.social

Hello Ontario, there's an election on Thursday! We read all the platforms and asked all the parties questions about major environmental questions (how will you help communities adapt to extreme weather? What are your plans for fossil fuels?). Here's what you need to know before you go vote
If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study.
This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice.
