This highlights a key lesson for policymakers: Related diversification matters. Leveraging existing capabilities can play a crucial role in fostering regional growth and innovation.

Analyzing Smart Specialization priorities in 102 European regions, we find that these strategies tend to be more effective in boosting labor productivity when they build on preexisting technological strengths.
