If you’re a manga fan, the exhibit is for you, if you’re a curious artist, 2/5 I don’t recommend.

The pieces were incredible in terms of technical prowess and beauty, emotion etc. I just wanted to know more than just trying to figure it out by looking at them.

Knowing which type of pen, ink, how they do color, how they go from sketch to print, do they have models posing, how were they trained, what does their studio look like, do they use templates… all were the reasons I went and I only got a little summary I could have asked chat GPT to produce.

Every piece was labeled “drawing, color and pen on paper” or similar.
I wish the exhibit had been more about the art process, the technique than the story.

The exhibit was organized around artists with each room dedicated to one or two.

Each room then guided you through the story and general themes of each body of work.
Non of the pieces were translated.
Works shown were primarily what I’d call a comprehensive. A revised sketch ready to copy.

I went to the Art of Manga at the DeYoung museum in SF and was super disappointed…
