Have you tried the move_and_collide function? Great entry point for collision in GameMaker that supports object and time collisions.

No problem! It's super dope and I rely on it a ton. I really enjoy laying out empty slots for my content in my sprite sheet and I can see my progress as I go along. Really easy to make micro adjustments and quickly update them vs painfully importing again.

You could put enemies that are in the same wave in an array, and then every x amount of frames remove an enemy from the array and spawn it onto your path.

Are you able to give a bit more insight into what you are trying to achieve? When mentioning patterns are you talking about enemy spawning, or their movement / behaviors, bullet patterns, etc.

Worth noting that GameMaker has a light mode, and is moving away from the workspace paradigm, so you rarely if ever have to use them (which is nice because they are awful).

Sara's tutorials are how I learned ages ago and are real good, just know that anything over 5 years old will not be taking advantage of some more modern stuff, though that doesn't necessarily invalidate the content.

I also really enjoyed Gentoo's iceberg series though it's on the more advanced end

I'd recommend following a tutorial for each and seeing which one speaks to you more. Both are incredibly powerful with pros and cons, no need to commit to either upfront if undecided

Happy to offer suggestions on the GameMaker side of things, the official space rocks tutorial is a good start point

Agreed, thank goodness they are moving away from workspaces, you can turn on the Code Editor 2 beta feature in preferences and basically never have to touch a workspace

Godot is dope if you're thinking about both 2d and 3d

As someone using 3d in GameMaker, it's totally doable, just not intuitive. Really cool engine for 2d tho

Since GameMakers room coordinates has 0,0 at the top left, you'll need to account for rooms at difference in room heights which is some not too bad math, but tough to get into here.

I'd recommend th GameMaker discord, they have really good help channels there, or feel free to send me a msg

Get your core gameplay loop in ASAP, start screen, gameplay, win/loss state. Once you have that you can polish and bug fix and start to think about bonus features.
