Yeah, so transactionally, keys to 3rd parties on PC are probably earning these companies less similarly to how direct Steam sales are. I guess it all factors into how many they sell on PC and other platforms vs cost of development in the end.

Or maybe Steam gets their cut directly from the publisher prior to distribution to 3rd party retailers. That probably makes more sense.

Essentially I suppose the pub/dev is getting paid twice. Once through bulk sale of the keys and once through steam with a 30% deduction. Whether it’s a direct buy from Steam or not, that final acquisition is likely still a part of the deal. Unless Steam gets their cut beforehand.

As I understand it, the publisher pays Steam directly for hosting the games. AFAIK, 3rd party retailers are essentially taking advantage of areas with lower value on the dollar to capably sell keys at a discount. Publishers/devs are also distributing these keys in bulk and I’d imagine at a loss.

Consistency is key. ☝🏻
