#journorequest: looking for people who work in media/entertainment/culture (broadly defined) to talk about the trend for minority characters to be killed off in stories

a topsy turvey world where calling Reform racist is apparently an incitement to violence but Reform *being racist* is not

This is a really key chart. Look at the difference between concern about immigration between Lab to Reform switchers and Lab to LD/Green/don't know switchers.

The latter group is five times larger.

The Joy of Disability Culture's Punk Side Honestly, everyone should be exposed to it.

'Disability culture' may seem oxymoronic to some, but to me it means good books, radical community care, and a whole lotta punk

In response to a question about gay marriage, Farage says kids needs a mum and a dad, and straight relationships last longer

Vile, obviously, but also fascinating for a so-called man of the people to be so far from public opinion on this

It’s not too late: the House of Lords can still protect disabled people from this dangerous assisted dying bill | Lucy Webster MPs passed it without sufficient safeguarding. If there is any point to the upper chamber, it is to give the legislation the open debate we need, says political journalist and author Lucy Webster

The House of Lords has the opportunity to do what MPs failed to - and change the assisted dying bill to protect disabled people

Here's to hoping the House of Lords gives the Assisted Dying Bill the scrutiny, safeguarding, & open debate it failed to get in the Commons. Lives -- of disabled and ill people, already under attack in this country -- are quite literally at stake.

Today the House of Lords begins its scrutiny of the assisted dying bill

They've got the opportunity to prove their worth by doing a better and more honest job than MPs

Lords committee suggest parts of assisted dying Bill β€˜sidestep parliament’ The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill will come before the House of Lords for its first debate among peers on Friday.

A crucial Lords committee thinks the assisted dying bill gives an unconstitutional level of power to ministers

The Lords now has the power to do what the Commons failed to - properly scrutinise and amend this dangerous bill

If they do call the new DWP 'the dept for growth' someone may have to acknowledge that cutting benefits is counterproductive. But I won't hold my breath

A shame that Lammy won't be shepherding the recognition of a Palestinian state and a shame Mahmood won't be sorting out prisons but have to hand it to Keir, they're good appointments

Rayner had to go but I think we'll miss her voice in cabinet. One of the few political minds, with a strong vision. Whether you agree with that vision or not, no one else in cabinet has one

Don't come for me but I do have some sympathy for Angela Rayner. The trusts like the one she's set up for her disabled son are notoriously complex. I get it

I would potentially have more sympathy if she hadn't been pushing disability benefits cuts

Banning refugees – people whose asylum claims have been processed by a hostile system and found to be legitimate – from bringing family members has one predictable and awful effect: instead of travelling alone, men will bring their wives and children on small boats, and some will drown.

it feels so much worse now because under the Tories there was some hope Labour would improve things, but now what?

02.09.2025 10:57 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I don't disagree with the first two sentences, but I think in general there's been far too much movement from 'not really noticing the problem' to 'despair'. Let's experiment with 'people and organisations try and enforce the norm' and then see if it is actually hard for it to be re-bottled.

Also basically argued there is no difference between a refugee and an economic migrant which is a take that belongs in Reform

You are in the wrong party ma'am

Absolutely extraordinary to watch a Labour MP on Newsnight argue that family reunion for asylum seekers is bad

As a disabled woman, I face a greater threat from some of the people in parliament than I do from asylum seekers

01.09.2025 16:19 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

is it only asylum seekers our Labour Prime Minister would object to living next to or would the sentiment apply to black and brown people in general? if merely the former, would he like to explain how he knows people he sees, say, in the street, actually are asylum seekers and not citizens?

Starmer could have said:

Vandalism isn't patriotism; daubing red crosses on Chinese takeaways and writing racist graffiti isn't patriotism; perfomatively sitting in front of a flag or tying one to a mosque isn't patriotism;

Patriotism is about making this country safe, happy productive for all.
