I'll give this a look thank you! I found the garment rigging tutorial useful, following this one got me the furthest though with this weird mesh separation. It sounds like I'll need to separate the meshes and weight them individually? I'm going to keep experimenting with it.

I haven't tried specific versions of blender just for rigging yet, I'm running in to issues where my solid mesh somehow splits apart when I change the character pose, or random verts being left unrigged causing horrible distortions
