There were 23 main camps, plus over 1,000 subcamps and a staggering 44,000 camps and other incarceration sites in total, including ghettos. In #Auschwitz alone, 1.1 million of the 1.3 million enslaved were killed.

My Austrian grandfather and Czechoslovakian grandmother fled Nazi Vienna as refugees in early 1939, several months after the Kristallnacht pogrom. Several of their siblings were later murdered in concentration camps.
