I saw quite a few of these, my first at Kasai Rinkai Park, set against a backdrop of pink flowers was especially memorable.

Breeds central and eastern Siberia, winters in China, the Koreas, Japan, Taiwan.

Yes! I have a 1.4x teleconverter on my 300mm

I’ve heard not good things about the 2x with autofocus

For raptors, size dimorphism is the easiest way to sex a bird in the field

Sizing birds can be extremely difficult as you generally need lots of experience sizing a lone individual

Comparing two birds side-by-side is best

I didn’t realize how easy it would be for me to walk up to some Pacific golden plovers in Hawaii!

I know how privileged I am to travel now and in the future for birds

I’m trying to not twitch as often for birds I know I will encounter elsewhere in the world for closer and patient observations

MOAR Red-tailored Hawk Pants!!

A red-tailed hawk in a ditch just outside of town. After mis-calculating a hunting effort for a vole, he is shown here launching back up to a wire. His wings are up and his body and pants are showing. A good look at his red tail as well.

I came upon this red-tailed hawk as he was in the ditch hunting. He had dropped down from a tree and was doing the grab-the-grass technique hoping to feel and catch a mole or vole. He came up empty this time and launched back up to the wire.
