Richard Carrington.

🚨 Exciting news! 🚨

Here is the first known picture of the 19th Century astronomer Richard Carrington – who had the largest geomagnetic storm in history named after him.

It was found by our assistant archivist Kate Bond thanks to some brilliant detective work.πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ πŸ‘‰οΈ ras.ac.uk/news-and-pre...

M33 taken 3.1.26 from Newtongrange. SeeStar50 83 mins of 10sec exposures. Bright full moon gave large gradient across the image. Used Siril, ceramic, DeNoise and Lightroom. Some 2.9m light years away and the third largest galaxy in the local group.

Catherine (tall, long blonde hair) standing in a wintery field by a large old rusting telescope. The golden setting sun is illuminating the trees in the distance.

A splendid cold walk to Fiddlers Gill to see the fab but rusting Victorian #Braidwood Telescope! Once part of the now long-gone Lanark Observatory, its optics are safe at the Lanark Museum. Sadly I see no hope in restoring this beauty tho, that's been long-abandoned in this field ☹️ #histsci πŸ”πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ

Southern uplands of the Moon. The prominent crater Tycho with its bright ray system is in the upper centre of the picture. Clavius is down and slightly right, and the elongated crater Schiller is on the terminator to the left. Sinus Iridum showing wrinkle ridges. Copernicus crater with its terraced walls and ejecta pattern. Lots of small craters visible around it.

3 images of the Moon tonight taken with #CFF160 πŸ”, #TeleVue 2.5x Powermate, #Touptek 585M camera. Best 25%(Southern uplands) or 5% (Sinus Iridum and Copernicus) stacked from 2500/5000 frame video in AstroSurface, and further processed in PixInsight. #astrophotography

Single 60s video of Jupiter, processed to show moons Europa (left of picture) and Io (right, closer to Jupiter). North is up, and Equatorial belts very prominent, with other belts clearly seen. 12 x 60s videos of Jupiter derotated to bring out some additional detail. More detail visible in N and S equatorial belts, along with white and red ovals.

Two images of Jupiter from last night. #CFF160 πŸ” with #TeleVue 2.5x PowerMate and #ASI585MC camera. Europa and Io visible in left image from single video (best 10% stacked), and right image is stacked from 12 x 60s videos in WinJupos. #astrophotography
