The marine conservation group @hifmb.de is looking for a postdoc and a Phd student to study coral genomics and conservation genetics. Join us to develop solutions for coral conservation and dive into the world of early branching metazoans: Deadlines coming up fast. jobs.awi.de/Vacancies/21...
We are welcoming applications for a full professorship on Molecular and Evolutionary Zoology at Kiel Univerdity, Northern Germany, with fantastic facilities and infrastructure! @uni-kiel.de @crc1182.bsky.social @transevo.bsky.social www.nature.com/naturecareer...
Congratulstions, Michael!

Busy week Fucus sampling with our colleagues @gloriareithmaier.bsky.social @lies-nerd.bsky.social @karikaphegyi.bsky.social and lots of others for #Fubluc and getting ready for outreach with kids for #TheOceanRaceEurope @geomarkiel.bsky.social
🚨 In case you missed it… our 4-year time-series analysis of Arctic Ocean viruses is out now!
Near-monthly samples — including through the dark, cold, polar winter ❄️ — using long-read metagenomics.
Short thread 🧵👇
After a four-year investigation, a breakthrough study reveals the cause of sea star wasting disease (SSWD). A strain of the bacterium Vibrio pectenicida is the culprit behind the marine epidemic that has killed billions of sea stars since 2013. Read the study: 🔗https://tinyurl.com/4rcb3xpf
Finally is this story out public!! With an amazing historical dataset from IMR (@havforskningsinstituttet) we demonstrate how human perturbations impact the genomic signal in one of the largest cod stocks in the world: the northeast arctic cod | Science Advances www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
🌊 Sponge genomes are helping unlock the secrets of aquatic symbioses — and thanks to @sangerinstitute.bsky.social, researchers now have access to 50+ genomes. Excited to see how these new samples help advance understanding of #AquaticSymbiosis. 🧬
PhD opportunity in my group as part of the #CONCENTRATE TRR. Marine algae-glycan-bacterial interactions. Please apply or share! www.uni-greifswald.de/en/universit...
First time ever that cryptic species in seagrasses were identified going full population genomics in NW Pacific Nanozostera japonica. In a secondary contact zone, triploid F1 hybrids were found among the two putative species, but no higher order hybrids, suggesting genomic incompatibility
There might be more seagrass species than you think - happy to share this fantastic collaboration with Xiaomei Zhang, @lei-yu.bsky.social and many others

One more week to apply! if you are a few years past your PhD and interested in advancing marine genomics and population genetics, come to Kiel, Northern Germany, to join a thriving, collaborative research and teaching environment.
The way forward: we suggest a truly independent institution like the European Central Bank that determines non-negotiable quotas. Great team work of #Kiel scientists led by Rainer Froese @geomarkiel.bsky.social
Total catches in western #Baltic Sea crashed 2002 -2022. Note that under an ecosystem-based management (EBFM), catches could be much higher. Much lower catches are currently not sustainable because stock sizes of cod, herring and sprat were depleted by ongoing overfishing.
Ever heard about “phantom recoveries” and “overfishing ratchets” ? These explain why still so many fish stocks are in a bad shape in European waters despite binding goals of the EU fisheries policy. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Keep on going, Marine Molecular Ecology part is next!
My knees tell me I’m aging—but do you also wonder what we can learn about aging by looking beyond humans? If you study aging in corals, duckweed, or other "unusual" systems, join us at @eseb2025.bsky.social to talk about aging outside the box! Abstract deadline: 5 May. eseb2025.com/call-for-abs...
Fantastic team effort, a big thanks to the GEOMAR seagrass group
Junior faculty job alert in Germany - Marine Evolutionary Genomics @geomarkiel.bsky.social / University of Kiel www.geomar.de/en/karriere/... Marine study system of your choice (no microbes, sorry…), excellent infrastructure and ship access, moderate teaching requirements, closing date 6 June
very much looking forward to watch!
Here’s the press release about what we’re up to these days. What isn’t mentioned in the text is how amazing it is to work with people as enthusiastic as I am, how incredible it is to see students so engaged in this project, and how teamwork truly feels like teamwork 🌊

🏆 Research integrity consultant and image forensics expert @elisabethbik.bsky.social has uncovered fraudulent data in over 7,600 scientific papers and exposed the practices of ‘paper mills’ that produce counterfeit scientific articles. She is honoured with the €200K Individual Award. Congrats!
If you are looking for a postdoc and interested in 2nd generation restoration considering genetic factors in seagrass ecosystem, targeting our pet species Zostera marina, still 10 days left to apply!
Looking for a PhD position, and interested in in 2nd generation restoration considering genetic factors in seagrasses (aka assisted evolution)? - still 10 days left to apply!
What can we learn about ageing by looking beyond sexually reproducing unitary organisms? Very excited that our symposium (w/ Dr. Margaux Bieuville, not on bsky) "Ageing outside of the box: insights from unusual and non-model species" was accepted @eseb2025.bsky.social! eseb2025.com/list-of-symp...
