I kind of wish there was one of these games that was like building a motherboard instead of a town. Like optimizing air flow and energy distribution. Different maps could be different motherboards in various locations.

None of this is backed by mechanics, but in my mind, the water mills are powered by the stream behind them, and suck cool air off the ocean. It carries the smell of food throughout the village, and funnels a much needed stream of cool air into the combat arena.
