Earlier this year, the CIBBRiNA “Gillnet North” team collaborated with local #fishers to run harbour #porpoise #bycatch mitigation trials off the north coast of #Iceland.

These findings highlight the complex nature of bycatch management and mitigation, and emphasise the importance of more targeted, seasonal mitigation strategies to help ensure the environmental #sustainability of #fisheries

The study analysed 27 years of data covering 20,000 monitored #fishing operations. Observations included:
🦭 Porpoise bycatch peaks in spring & autumn but in winter for dolphins & seals
🦭 Keeping gear in the water for longer & using large mesh nets increase risk of bycatch, especially for seals [2/3]

The findings emphasise the importance of more targeted, seasonal mitigation strategies to help ensure the environmental #sustainability of #fisheries.

A new paper, co-authored by CIBBRiNA case study lead Al Kingston, has identified key patterns in #bycatch of harbour porpoise, common dolphin, and harbour and grey seals in #UK static net #fisheries. [1/3]
