New article from CINEA spotlights CIBBRiNA’s collaborative work with #fishers! 📣
It introduces CIBBRiNA and our 8 case studies, through which we work to reduce #bycatch across different European #fisheries. Crucial to all that we do is the knowledge and involvement of the fishing industry. [1/2]
This research adds to a growing bank of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of artificial lights as a mitigation tool, not only for sharks and rays but also other kinds of marine animals such as #turtles.

Researchers worked with #fishers in the Gulf of California to experiment with four different types of light, each emitting different wavelengths. Results showed all the light types, especially orange, reduced bycatch of elasmobranchs but had no impact on how many commercial fish were caught.

A new study involving #CIBBRiNA Stakeholder Advisory Board member @noaa.gov shows that adding artificial lights to gillnets can significantly reduce #bycatch of elasmobranchs such as #sharks and rays, without reducing target catch. 🦈

The design features an additional spacing bar, to ensure juvenile turtles do not enter the nets. The trials produced very positive results, with the nets succeeding in excluding turtles of all ages whilst having no impact on shrimp catch.

This year, CIBBRiNA has had the privilege to attend and present at several key #fisheries events, one of the most rewarding being DanFish International.
Our latest blog post reflects on our experience at the event, which demonstrated the importance of meeting #fishers in their own spaces. [1/2]

Complementary work along the north-western Spanish coast found that many #dolphins & #porpoises stranded there showed signs of entanglement. The research was carried out by CEMMA, who presented their work on strandings – which fishers played a key role in – at our spring meeting in April.
