New article from CINEA spotlights CIBBRiNA’s collaborative work with #fishers! 📣

It introduces CIBBRiNA and our 8 case studies, through which we work to reduce #bycatch across different European #fisheries. Crucial to all that we do is the knowledge and involvement of the fishing industry. [1/2]

Researchers worked with #fishers in the Gulf of California to experiment with four different types of light, each emitting different wavelengths. Results showed all the light types, especially orange, reduced bycatch of elasmobranchs but had no impact on how many commercial fish were caught.

A new study involving #CIBBRiNA Stakeholder Advisory Board member @noaa.gov shows that adding artificial lights to gillnets can significantly reduce #bycatch of elasmobranchs such as #sharks and rays, without reducing target catch. 🦈

The design features an additional spacing bar, to ensure juvenile turtles do not enter the nets. The trials produced very positive results, with the nets succeeding in excluding turtles of all ages whilst having no impact on shrimp catch.

Share your #bycatch mitigation insights with us!

As part of our work to reduce – and where possible eliminate – bycatch of #ETP species, we’re developing an online mitigation toolkit which will collate essential knowledge on bycatch mitigation practices from #fisheries across the globe. [1/2]

With this tool, we’ll be able to have more confidence that each strategy applied to a specific #fishery and #ETP species across the #CIBBRiNA case studies will yield a more accurate and precise understanding of rates of bycatch. [2/3]

How can we optimise the design of strategies for monitoring #bycatch before they’ve been implemented in #fisheries?

As part of our work to build a bycatch assessment toolkit, we’ve created and applied a new simulation platform for testing monitoring strategies. [1/3]

This year, CIBBRiNA has had the privilege to attend and present at several key #fisheries events, one of the most rewarding being DanFish International.

Our latest blog post reflects on our experience at the event, which demonstrated the importance of meeting #fishers in their own spaces. [1/2]

Complementary work along the north-western Spanish coast found that many #dolphins & #porpoises stranded there showed signs of entanglement. The research was carried out by CEMMA, who presented their work on strandings – which fishers played a key role in – at our spring meeting in April.
