Last week I had my first little gay sitdown with a student who enlisted in 2025. While she was in boot camp, our history--her shared history--was scrubbed from DoD media, from curricula, from libraries, before she could ever read it. She came looking for stories. And a mirror. And a stepping stone.

Watching Gaza and sensing upcoming fuckery, I left active duty last year. I'm teaching again, as a civilian, at the same military training center. Still, the students find me. It is harder to know what to say now. Conditions for queer people improved every year that I was an active duty airman.

I sat across from them, both of us in the same uniform, and talked about the arc of justice. Explain how the old reactionary BS repeats, and we win every time. Connect with their stories. Tell them--show them--what they need to hear: you will be ok. This narrative is in you now; it's yours too.

For years, my students were military members fresh out of boot camp. They asked for stories about Don't Ask, Don't Tell--a bygone era. Before gay marriage legalization--a bygone era. Before federal marriage benefits--bygone. The olden days. History.

Students want pieces of themselves reflected back. They want to envision themselves, successful, in a future of their own design. I tell them they're smart and capable, worthy of happiness, resilient to mistakes... eagerly anticipated and lovingly received in our small community.

I am a queer teacher. Queer students find me, both because this is the cosmic ✨️way of things✨️ and because I make myself easy to find. When I was a teenager newly out to myself, I felt very, very alone. So now I try to be a lighthouse, or a mirror, or a stepping stone. It's mutually beneficial.
