In the NYC mayoral primary, the voters defeated the party establishment. That’s what people are saying when they say the party tried to stop him. Pedantic "erm, ackshually, the VOTERS are the party!" stuff is obnoxious.
When Bill Clinton, major donors, and virtually every institutional player line up behind one candidate while attacking another as “too radical,” that IS the Democratic Party establishment trying to clobber someone. The fact that voters rejected that effort doesn’t retroactively mean it didn’t happen
