“Many religious Americans...understand this distinction intuitively. They know that faith is most meaningful when it is freely chosen, when no institutional authority has shaped what you believe or required the appearance of agreement.” @landonschnabel.bsky.social

Should have tagged the author himself @landonschnabel.bsky.social
I teach his paper every year. It is 1) helpful for helping students understand contemporary politics (or...any era's politics, really), and 2) a reminder that old theory isn't inherently bad theory.

The end of the world is here. Or near. Or neither. Many evangelical Christian TikTokers have spent the past few weeks preparing for the Rapture, or a biblical end-times.

Interesting story about the rapture predictions with some quotes from me: www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

I used to be a minister and was curious why clergy feel dissatisfied with their jobs and consider leaving ministry.

I identified three key predictors: feeling uncared for by one’s congregation, poor mental health, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, religious doubts.

Many Americans support same-sex marriage and still say there are only two genders. About 2 in 3 agree with both.

The Americans Who Quit the Church to Become Witches—Among Other Things While millions are leaving the organized Christian faiths, they’re not abandoning spirituality. Instead, they’re seeking practices outside old institutions.

Here's an interesting story about religious change in the United States that cites my research with Ilana Horwitz, Peyman Hekmatpour (@phekmat.bsky.social), and Cyrus Schleifer: newrepublic.com/article/1945...

Death of Pope Francis marks end of historic papacy Cornell experts comment on the legacy of Pope Francis, who died on Monday, marking the end of a historic papacy.

On Francis' papacy, @landonschnabel.bsky.social says: "His calculated reforms — allowing priests to bless same-sex couples while maintaining traditional marriage doctrine — create breathing room within doctrinal boundaries rather than dismantling them." as.cornell.edu/news/death-p...

I’m excited to share our new publication where @landonschnabel.bsky.social, Ilana Horwitz, Cyrus Schleifer, and I use a mixed-method approach to study young Americans’ trend of leaving organized religions for individualized spiritualities that align better with their values.

The slowing of church decline shows religious polarization is only getting worse (RNS) — People increasingly craft their spiritual lives according to personal values, rather than institutional dictates. Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to God. -Lenny Bruce

If the concept of God has any validity or any use, it can only be to make us larger, freer, and more loving. If God cannot do this, then it is time we got rid of Him. -James Baldwin

Many manage this conflict by disengaging from religious institutions while reimagining spirituality on their own terms.

Thus, we're seeing a trend toward individualization and DIY religion and spirituality.

We included the quotes in the next post in the epigraph.

Perceiving institutions as stifling self-actualization, marginalizing sexual minorities, constraining women, or demonstrating hypocrisy leads to conflict between religious commitments and deeply held values related to concern for others and the sacredness of the individual.

Using longitudinal quantitative surveys and in-depth interviews from a nationally-representative sample, we show how and why young people leave organized religion. It's more about the institutions than the faith traditions.

Group picture of the 2024-2025 PRRI Public Fellows standing in front of a PRRI banner

The PRRI(@prripoll.bsky.social) public fellows met in DC last week to learn more about doing research on religion that makes a public impact.

I highly recommend PRRI's Public Fellows Program and suggest applying again if you don't get it the first time (I applied a few times before being selected).
