we have a tree in our garden that gets decimated every year by caterpillars. Caterpillars/butterfly are by far our most successful crop!! we love looking for the larvae and waiting for them to all hatch.

The HW is often so bespoke to the specific industry that it doesn't actually change in decades, A colleague who worked in drag race timing used old DOS based systems with RS232 break-beam detectors from memory. but it worked

it's interesting, I've worked in tech companies offering products to similar industries.

On the solution side so much effort was put in supporting random old HW on new OS.

On the client side they would request SW and spend months and $ configuring it to work click for click like the old system.
