Teacher β†’ Facilitator of Learning I hate educational buzz words. In my industry of educational technology, they show up on the regular. We redefine words to meet the current…

How do you navigate the space between instructor and facilitator? medium.com/voiceedu/tea... #EduSky #FutureOfLearning #EdTech

Four keys to productive coaching conversations:

1. Focus on relationship-building and cultivating trust.
2. Keep the conversation going.
3. Ask questions: for clarity, out of curiosity, and for permission to share feedback.
4. Be comfortable with where the conversation goes.

A4: I include a self-assessment with every major assignment. Something I borrowed from a colleague is also asking students to sum up what they did well and where they want to continue to grow. #ungrading #edusky

Classroom full of bored or sleeping students with a teacher standing at the lectern.

Classroom full of bored or sleeping students with a teacher standing at the lectern.

The ONLY instructional strategy with a NEGATIVE effect size: Lecturing. -0.26 or 1/2 a year's loss
Why?
It's passive.

There's no room for engagement or interaction necessary for deep understanding & skill development.

Just a lot of one person talking.

A3: I have found it takes time for students to become comfortable with this process. Frequent 1:1 conferences are helpful starting points. Meeting regularly for informal discussions about their work helps ease the transition to reviewing a larger body of work later on. #ungradingchat #edusky

Something I have tried in a capstone course is entering "βœ“" grades at various points (βœ“+, βœ“, βœ“-, or 0 for no submission) w/points attached to each one to show progress toward the standard. These points are ultimately unweighted at the end of the term when the grade conference overrides them, though.

104th NCSS Annual Conference Friday November 22, 2024/10:50 AM - 11:45 AM "Lift Every Voice: Inquiry, Collaboration, and Assessment in Social Studies" Joseph Marangell

If you're at #NCSS2024 this weekend and interested in this topic, I'll be doing a poster session with a colleague on Friday from 10:50 to 11:45 AM! We'll share strategies for engaging students in "visible thinking" activities throughout each stage of the inquiry process.

Yes! The funny thing is that most of the time (with me, at least) the final grade ends up being the same or close to the placeholder grade that's already in the gradebook!

Q2: A gradebook "hack" I adapted from Sarah Zerwin’s Point-Less: Track daily progress, but base the final grade on a conference where Ss bring evidence of meeting course goals and discuss what grade they earned. The conference is weighted at 99% to override the other scores. #EduSky #UngradingChat
