In addition to salt marshes - as Neil correctly points out - gene editing, which gave us a curative treatment for sickle cell disease, also has its origins in frog embryos (Aaron Klug's work on zinc fingers) and how yeast have "sex" (Jim Haber work on HO).
"Basic" science -> lifesaving medicines.
