Journalists need to be aware that this stuff is largely written under pseudonyms *for a reason* and that if you inadvertently out a fan by publicizing their fan work or identity without their permission, they could face real-world stigma and consequences!

I was outed as a fan and fired for it!

I think a lot of things can be true at once re: fandom and the fourth wall. The basic reality is that there *is* no fourth wall and arguably hasn't been since 2011, 50 Shades era. But that doesn't mean fan privacy goes out the window, or that it's fine citing fic or fans in articles w/o permission.

Also obviously a lot of my feelings are personal ones and not, "Well, this shouldn't be covered because I said so!" I keep posting about it/engaging with people because I'm trying to work through thoughts about it!

Yeah, and it just turns me off specifically with the HR coverage. I understand but I do feel weirdly on display like I'm part of a zoo or something.

But the circumstances of the industry (and editor biases) have shut out knowledgable voices. So much "fandom coverage" now feels like reinventing a very basic wheel; I feel like my and my peers' work is being actively erased. Fandom *should* be covered—but you need to know what you're talking about.

I guess fandom itself is fair game, but talking about specific fanfics feels really invasive. Like certain parts of fan spaces feel like they shouldn't be included but I don't know if that's just me.

Not the Vulture piece specifically but other pieces written by men, which I think is part of it as well. E Alex Jung is a queer Asian man which is great, but a lot of the coverage has come from white guys and I think that also feels a bit annoying to get the "Why do women like this?" takes from them

I think this is a really great thread. I definitely feel a knee jerk defensiveness that comes from the tradition of the fourth wall between fandom and everything else, but also because... well, I'm defensive! A lot of the coverage around HR has been, "Why do women like this?" and feels insulting

if you share a fic with a normie audience you are painting a target on that writer's back. I don't think most people understand how uncool it is

yeah I feel so so uncomfortable with mainstream coverage of fandom but this is happening even if I want to ignore it

I said this yesterday in a Slack w/r/t the NY Mag piece, but most mainstream articles about fandom aren't really For Fandom — they're for people outside of it, which is why anything written by someone who isn't active in a fandom can often slant towards "let's gawk at the enclosure"

There really aren't any big pubs anymore with journalists who can solely dedicate themselves to writing about fan culture, so the ones who do often frame themselves as the first anthropologist discovering a new species, and that definitely tends to get fans' hackles up
