Still makes me a bit sad that I couldn't attend (or present) in person because of the pandemic.
As I get ready to move countries once again, I remind myself of my chronic anxiety, which half the days means I'd rather not get out of bed in the morning, and conclude I've not done too badly in life after all.

02.08.2025 23:33 — 👍 3 🔁 6 💬 1 📌 0Small correction: the article claims that the year 2000 was 25 years ago. In fact, it was five, perhaps six, years ago at most.

30.07.2025 23:18 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0This sucks and also, this has been the situation in Europe for a few years now. The worst part is that I've had to pay import duties on things friends sent me as presents.
30.07.2025 23:07 — 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The WaPa headline says: 60,000 Gazans were killed. 18,500 of them were children. These are some of their names. Then follows an enormous list of small print names
Thousands of small print names interspersed with some photos of some of the child victims
NEW: 18,500 children have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
The Washington Post has just published every single known name.
A seminal moment.
And in that latter sense in particular, I appreciate who he was and what he meant to me, even if in the past years — and those years before — I often wished he had been different. But this is who he was and in the end I guess that's okay.
29.07.2025 22:59 — 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I'm pretty stoic about death in general, but in the past year, there were many times where his death, and the relationship we had (and didn't have) suddenly hit me hard. And though I don't know what exactly I miss, I miss him. I am also a lot more him than I like to admit.
29.07.2025 22:59 — 👍 6 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yesterday was a year since my dad died. We weren't particularly close and our relationship, that mostly existed on WhatsApp, was awkward and superficial. I wasn't very shocked when he died, unexpected though it was. And yet... it is super weird for a parent to die and I hadn't really expected that.

29.07.2025 19:48 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Look, Israel deserves all the punishments (that it likely will never get), but recognising Palestine is actually something that shouldn't be seen as a punishment to Israel but is right because Palestinians are human beings. (Here the usual disclaimer about countries being geosocial constructs.)
