And in that latter sense in particular, I appreciate who he was and what he meant to me, even if in the past years — and those years before — I often wished he had been different. But this is who he was and in the end I guess that's okay.

I'm pretty stoic about death in general, but in the past year, there were many times where his death, and the relationship we had (and didn't have) suddenly hit me hard. And though I don't know what exactly I miss, I miss him. I am also a lot more him than I like to admit.

Yesterday was a year since my dad died. We weren't particularly close and our relationship, that mostly existed on WhatsApp, was awkward and superficial. I wasn't very shocked when he died, unexpected though it was. And yet... it is super weird for a parent to die and I hadn't really expected that.

Me, not a New Yorker, spent way too long thinking what the acronym BDFM could stand for (except the F, which was obvious)...

Look, Israel deserves all the punishments (that it likely will never get), but recognising Palestine is actually something that shouldn't be seen as a punishment to Israel but is right because Palestinians are human beings. (Here the usual disclaimer about countries being geosocial constructs.)
