For the record, as an adult I proudly pay for software by companies I respect. Grateful for all the alternatives to subscription-based monopolies, and the teams that making it happen with very few resources/funding.

After a while they blocked certain room names, so I tried joining "zeraw" as the first thing that came to my mind, and sure enough everyone had simply started spelling room names backwards.

I remember AOL sent an email to my dad's inbox warning against using chat rooms to share software.

The chat rooms were just named anything, but had a max # of people. So you get warez, warez1, warez2, etc. You'd have to keep searching for room names incrementally until one wasn't full.

I owe my design career to downloading a cracked Photoshop 3 from a warez chat room. I remember being in awe of the ability to make anti-aliased text.

there's especially a post-physical/pre-internet black hole of late 90s/early 00s art/music/photography trapped on scratched DVDs, blank CDs, and zip disks

the internet acts more like a social filter than connective tissue.

similarly, streaming platforms position themselves as the system of record for all media, but the majority of my personal mp3 collection isn't available there. same with movies.

we're being served tiny slices of human knowledge and creativity, constantly told it's the whole pie.

the internet as "sum of all human knowledge" feels outdated. it started on that trajectory, and we warned that what you put on the Internet would be there forever.

instead, the internet has become a continuously narrowing slice of human knowledge. and increasingly mixed with bot slop and disinfo.

the judgements practically incentivize continued violations.

fines/damages/penalties should be reported in the media as a percentage of the company's annual profit, and compared next to how much the company saved from whatever cost-cutting thing made them liable.

not aiming to sound conspiracy-y, but it's not rational behavior.

Apple famously avoids jumping into unproven trends (AR being a rare slip), so their lag in AI is actually one of the few moves that makes sense.

companies are putting billions on the line, only to say:

"use it or else get a negative performance review"

"use it or you'll be left behind"

"use it to solve world hunger"

it's not rational behavior, even accounting for greed alone. what carrot is being chased here? who's holding the stick?

just an unfathomable degree of speculative valuations happening alongside mandates to incorporate it at every level of society from education to healthcare to policymaking, within the span of a few years.

the rise of PCs and internet seemed more obviously inevitable, and yet way less forced.
