This season is the first in probably close to 25 years that I've decided not to watch #sabres games. The way they've started this season justifies my decision, and it seems it will be a long while before I reclaim my fandom.

What a shame.

It was insane to me that the NHL scheduled NO GAMES on a FRIDAY during the FIRST WEEK of the season.

Just mind boggling brand management on their part.

This is my plan.

Even if they don't, we'll have helped someone and done our part to build community where there wasn't one before. 7/8

That's what gives me hope. What keeps me going when I want to hide away and hope that someone else fights this fight for me.

We may not be able to change the world right now, as badly as we want to. But we can change someone's day. We can help those in our community that need it. 6/8

We started by volunteering with a couple of organizations that work with our immigrant communities. We've even organized volunteers to chaperone students from their school to their parents' cars.

Now we're organizing fundraisers and food drives.

No task is too small if it helps someone. 5/8

Back in February I joined our local democratic committee. We started a volunteer subcommittee, whose sole focus is to find volunteer opportunities in the community and then match those opportunities with people.

We don't have a lot of resources, but we make the most of what we have. 4/8

It might not feel like much, but feeding one person for a single day means one person got to eat for another day.

Better yet, volunteering at a food bank for a day means tens of families get to eat that day.

Donating even $5 to a non-profit that's on the ground helping people is meaningful. 3/8

As private citizens that have no real sway in the government, what can we do to be helpful? To feel hopeful?

These things are related, by the way.

What I've come to believe is that there is no act too small not to make a difference. 2/8

The world sucks right now. As Americans, we're inundated with bad news, violence, stupidity, hypocrisy, embarrassment, and shame nearly every hour of every day.

It's exhausting and overwhelming, and it's made me feel helpless and hopeless.

But by helping we can create our own hope.

At the grocery store today an older woman told me that I was, "... the cutest shopper (she's) ever seen."

I had always suspected my look of mild confusion / frustration was my cutest. Now I know for sure.
