Pareidolia is your friend. A crutch for me maybe. Explore through scribbles and shapes much akin to cloud watching. Ron Lemen said in a very old issue of ImagineFX > don't start with Loomis heads > start with scribbles and build structure/the known from there - unique results will come.

That way you can paint in B/W but still work in color - try changing colors chaotically doing this - you'll quickly find out that value is much more important than the colors you pick, and that this method can produce some interesting color interactions you might not have thought of previously!

A useful trick for working with values digitally is filling a layer with black and choosing the 'color' blend mode. Once you've got that make sure your color-picker/dropper tool is set to either ignore adjustment layers (photoshop) or to only pick colors from your working (active) layer.
