I'm a big fan of the series made by them as a player, but dang. This'll take a while.
As always, the only real lesson you can learn from "how were they so successful" for any game that was super successful is "good for them". You can find some learnings of stuff to try carefully in the stories of small successes, perhaps. Lots to learn from failures, though.
