How about *only* hurricane pairings in the Atlantic and for the entire period of record (since 1851). What are the closest two hurricanes have ever been recorded? Humberto and Imelda right at the top. The nearest reliable contender was Easy and Fox back in 1951.

Most certainly. Due to water having a high heat capacity it takes a lot more energy for all of that heat to be released compared to air or land. Thus, high water temps will generally stick around for a much longer period of time which could spawn tropical activity late into the season.

This is classified as normal at this time given that we are entering the peak of the season. This trend will continue through October generally. I have my own theories on frequency but at this time it looks to be relatively βnormalβ this year, but will not rule out a surprise increase in Oct/Nov.
