There was an old Nintendo Power comic where Nester goes into the game of Super Mario Brothers 3 and when he leaves the game he still has a raccoon tail in the real world.

As weird as it sounds, I actually think the biggest influence for me was Super Mario Brothers 3. Being able to turn into a raccoon, a world where things can be bigger or smaller, mushrooms make ya grow, people getting unwillingly transformed with wands. And my imagination extrapolated a lot.
