Not just one for Operation Mincemeat fans. This whole journey to uncovering Hester is truly one of the power of archives, community and honouring those with lesser known histories who contributed so much. God that’s brilliant.

The book not only features Hester’s story but also chapters on Montagu, Cholmondeley, Watkins (by Claudia Caplan), Haselden (by Rose Crossgrove) and Averil, who helped Hester write the letters (by Greg Callus). Jack Lawrence also shares the story of finding Hester’s living family!

URGENT MEMO RE: FINDING HESTER In 1943, Hester Leggatt wrote a pair of fake love letters as part of a decoy mission that helped change the course of World War Two. She spent the next eighty years, like so many other women working behind the scenes, lost to history. In 2023, a group of fans of newly opened West End musical ‘Operation Mincemeat’ were inspired by its message of doing something useful. Hester, now a character in the show, deserved to have her real story known. Scouring archival documents, reaching out to MI5, tracking down living family members, and using her wartime diaries and real love letters, the team found so much more than they ever expected. FINDING HESTER tells both the story of Hester Leggatt and the people who found her. The book will be published on June 5th 2025 by Mirror Books. It is available for preorder now.

For the past few years I’ve been dedicating my all-important birthday wish to hoping it’ll be the year I get an agent. I must have wished extra hard last year because not only did I end up with an incredible agent, I am SO excited that I can spend my birthday announcing this!

I wish I did! Maybe I need to learn Russian and read the case files 😅

I honestly have no idea! I think every theory has to ignore at least one piece of evidence to make itself fit. Mostly because cutting themselves out of the tent suggests leaving in a hurry, but the footsteps of them leaving are supposedly walking pace. Hard to reconcile the two.

I don’t believe they could have developed hypothermia inside the tent. It wouldn’t explain why they left. We also have their diaries from the trip and they have been perfectly fine in the tent previously. At one point, too warm!

infrasound. And, of course, aliens, government coverups, parachute mines, murder (by escaped prisoners, by each other, etc.). Some are more believable than others 😅

I mean hypothermia 100000% is what killed most of them. Their actual deaths aren’t as hard to explain as why they left their tent without shoes on. There’s not really evidence of an avalanche, and it’s not an avalanche prone area. The theories are everything from aliens to katabatic wind, yetis to

happened on the night they all died. As I say, I’m not completely convinced, but the emotional heft of it all is intense. I can buy a lot of the theories of what happened to the hikers that ended their lives, but I don’t think anyone’s ever sufficiently explained why they first left their tent.

I definitely recommend giving it a read! It’s not the newest book on the case and there have been developments since (although I’m not sure many people are convinced but the ‘official’ explanation) but it’s well written and a good intro! The final chapter is basically the author’s theory of what

You may well have done! The book made me cry in public when I finished it, though, so would definitely recommend 😅😅

I love a good nonfiction read but they usually take me longer to get through than fiction. This one, though, I’m flying through! It’s incredibly compelling.
