Market rental ownership is also being diversified currently. Vancouver and Translink, for example, are both starting rental market projects. Most non-profit redevelopment projects now include market rental. There are other options

I'm 99% sure the people advocating for those restrictions mean that they should be non-market, not that they should be owned by corporations. People anti-reit are also anti-corporation

Opinion: UBC SkyTrain must be Metro Vancouver's next transit priority | Urbanized With a long-term lens of its immense benefits, Metro Vancouver's next public transit priority must be the UBC SkyTrain extension.

#SkyTrain to #UBC must be Metro Vancouver's next public transit priority.

Like a regional Town Centre, UBC is an economic and transit ridership powerhouse.

Delaying it only adds to the costs of an inevitable project. #TransLink #bcpoli #vanpoli #vanre

Victoria, BC sees a lot more cycling than I think people realize.

Someone who lives there should make a YouTube channel on its cycling infrastructure, progress, and culture like I do for Montreal.

BC fracked gas exports have about the same carbon footprint as coal, with or without electrified LNG plants. And LNG competes with wind and solar, which is *much* less polluting. And LNG will likely go bankrupt competing with solar. Why are we subsidizing this disaster?!? #bcpoli #climatesky

I wouldn't be surprised if dwell times at stations is longer too.

We need property managers, but there are plenty of organizations that will happily build housing for little profit (if they have the money)

We have lots of models that show buildings and orgs can -run housing on their own. Non-profits, stratas, and co-ops all run themselves. Should they have government support? Absolutely, but the government shouldn't run the majority of housing

The issue with government housing is that top-down systems will never work for everyone, and often lead to issues of corruption/authoritarianism. The gov't should definitely fund and support housing, but it doesn't need to run it.

I also agree, I don't like for profit housing, but I think renting is an amazing system and we need way more rentals. When there is competition in the rental market landlords have less ability to collect economic rents from housing

All my landlord does is collect my rent, and pay my building manager with a part of the revenue. If the landlord didn't exist to take a cut, my rent would be less.

There's also the difference between a building manager and a landlord. If they are separate positions (ie the landlord doesn't manage the building) then the property manager collects a salary to make sure the building doesn't fall apart. My building manager is great!

Democratic and electoral reform: the case for deliberative mini-publics Our recommendations to the provincial legislature’s Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform.

The BC Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform was an engagement model that set a global standard and has been studied & replicated worldwide.

Senior economist @1alexhemingway.bsky.social told a legislature committee such a model could strengthen democratic engagement in BC.

This should lead to the re-provincialization/nationalization of BC Rail, at least for the sea to sky corridor. Mark Carney, use some of your defense spending/megaproject cash on this

I saw the Cole Starnes supportive housing from the highway the last time I drove through Abbotsford. Wedged between the highway and train tracks, just above the search and rescue. 17 minute walk to the Walmart pictured.

I'd also love to see more metro van municipalities adopt car share. We despirately need to remove parking from new development

I'll have to look at the report, but I'm curious if it splits by rental/condo. I heard that banks won't finance condo unless it has a certain level of parking. Maybe the financiers also need to update their policies

I don't have the studies, but in my econ policy class 5ish years ago my prof said that this really just doesn't happen. People like where they live, and very few will move because of tax increases. (also, most people's money is tied up in businesses in their country! How will they leave that?)

Yeah, besides the hitler issue (which is 200x times reason enough) the fact that the site is unusable for anyone without an account should really mean that it's useless as a platform for governments to use

I'm sure you could do the math on how much each of these PH cost, for the same 3 people to show up and give the same presentations for every item. 4+ security guards, probably a dozen other staff, and council. $10k+?

Planners: Vancouver’s most popular summer tradition will be giant street festivals

People: very cool

Planners: tens of thousands of people will fill the street and enjoy walking from one end to the other

People: will we make any of them a permanent thing?

Planners: goodness no
