Mobile apps are not as forced as modern browsers to use encryption, so you're still very much at risk. And both mobapps and webapps often use other protocols. Not sure if they suffer from MITM I'm not a cybersec expert but prolly. Anyway I don't see the point, always better to VPN in that situation
