Connecting with the Tasmanian wilderness through plein air painting!
Thank you so much! I love seeing your sketches βΊοΈ

08.08.2025 20:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A gouache study of waves at the beach, with my little plein air palette and brush.
Turns out painting on a boat in big swell gives the finished piece a rather organic look π

The tongues are sooooo good - that texture!
05.08.2025 07:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is amazing! I absolutely love low flutes. I had the privilege of playing what I think was called a hyper-contrabass flute? It was taller than me and I almost fainted playing it π
05.08.2025 07:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Why thank you! My soul feels complete now that I've scratched the itch
05.08.2025 07:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Finally back to painting after moving interstate - which involves a lot of faffing about when you live on an island. Just about to board the boat back to mainland Australia. Goodbye Tasmania πππ
#watercolour #painting #ArtYear #pleinair
Gosh I absolutely love it!
29.07.2025 11:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I totally agree! I always learn SO much when I paint outside. It is often a very humbling experience π
28.07.2025 05:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thank you so much! I hope all your wonderful projects are going well too β€οΈ
27.07.2025 00:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Marion Bay is one of my favourite spots in Tasmania βΊοΈ
27.07.2025 00:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm holding my sketchbook up with the beach in the background. Clipped to my sketchbook on the left page is my plein air gouache palette with 12 colours. On the right page is a gouache study of the breaking waves.
A balmy 10 degrees on the beach yesterday. I decided to tackle my nemesis - painting waves... Also, does anyone else kinda feel like a badass when they wear black fingerless gloves?
#pleinair #ArtYear #gouache #painting #sketchbook
Oh yes I totally agree! I've started doing this recently and it's made me much less hesitant
26.07.2025 01:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ah yes that makes a lot of sense. I'm the same when I'm doing abstract watercolours. It's so fun to just see what happens β¨
26.07.2025 01:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0What a beautiful scene! I love seeing other artist's set ups, thanks for sharing βΊοΈ
26.07.2025 01:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Gotta strike while the creativity is hot!
23.07.2025 08:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A page from a sketchbook: on the right is a small sketch of a little creek scene in blue ink. On the left is a colour study of the same scene with red rocks and green reflections in the water. I'm planning to do a larger, more finished piece based on these sketches
Planning my next gouache painting. How do you start a painting? Value studies? Sketches? Or just jump right in?
#gouache #sketchbook #painting #ArtYear
Thank you so much! You've boosted my morning βΊοΈ
21.07.2025 23:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes you're right! A mash up of the places I've been recently, mixed in with how I was feeling that day βΊοΈ
21.07.2025 23:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A small gouache study of a snow capped mountain sitting behind a house covered hill with autumn leaves still hanging on and adding pops of bright red and yellow. And I decided to add the roof top and power lines in the foreground to give more depth to the scene
A closer shot
Snow on the mountain today! I still get so excited when the peaks turn white. This is the view from my backyard β¨

A gouache sketch of a flat open landscape with distant blue hills. I find it hard to make foregrounds interesting but not too distracting!
A gouache sketch of a dry tidal river waiting for the tide to come back up. Seaweed is strewn across the white sand and blue mountains sit in the background
Two little paintings done on one A4 sheet of green paper
Some imagined landscapes to test out #gouache on this green paper. It's so freeing to just jump into a painting with no plan!
#ArtYear #landscapepainting #art
Oh wow this is delicious!
18.07.2025 22:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A gouache study in my sketchbook of a zoomed in view of a small stream. The water is reflecting the bright blue of the sky as it winds through the granite rocks.
More winter plein air (I drew three lines then went home and did the rest in front of the heater)

Amazing! Thanks for sharing β¨
17.07.2025 02:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It feels like such an achievement when you do though hey! We should get extra art points π
16.07.2025 23:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wow I absolutely love these!
16.07.2025 06:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've been experimenting with blues lately! I find the blue I choose makes such a big difference to the feel of the painting. I've been using a limited palette within this palette, using just one or two of the blues to see how it changes the vibe
15.07.2025 00:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hahaha absolutely! The finishing touches phase is at least 90% of the painting process right?
15.07.2025 00:32 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oh I fully support this strategy! The amount of times I quit half way because I got hungry and tired, or drank too much coffee beforehand......
14.07.2025 11:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Two small gouache paintings in my sketchbooks. The top one is a tannin-rich stream running through smooth rocks and lush ferns. It was a damp chilly day so I finished that in record time! The bottom is a study on rocky sea cliffs on a crisp sunny day.
My current gouache palette!
Trying to keep up the #pleinair in winter is hard! But at least the #gouache doesn't dry out
