Australian O&G and surgery folks: Iโ€™ve looked online to no avail and was wondering if there was a RANZCOG guidance document re fee setting (private hospital)? I can see some advice from RACS. Not for work but for me!

A photo of a woman in an older classroom with wooden benches.

I got to teach in the Quadrangle Building at the University of Sydney - maybe my great great grandfather sat in this very room as a student 113 years ago.

This is coming up fast! The self-paced modules I run through bedside manners will still available to enrol in while Iโ€™m off, so if you need to do some CPD and want to learn more about an evidence based approach to communication, check them out!

Had a slight panic where I realised I've cited this anthropologist but then @notalawyer.bsky.social said it was an ok book at the start.

David Graeber wrote a great paper on the violent simplification of bureaucracy and whenever I talk about the term, people audibly react to the feeling of it!

"We aim to help doctors improve diagnosis by paying more attention to how patients describe their symptoms. By closely analysing conversations between doctors and patients, we can identify specific details of patient talk that can indicate a specific diagnosis. We will focus on endometriosis and sub-acute pain. We will use what we find to design training to support doctors to rely on these details to help improve diagnosis. We will then assess whether such training improves practice."

And then there's the 2024 NHMRC applicaiton on pain, including endometriosis. Which would've also be very cool.

How well a conversation goes can make or break a relationship. A conversation that goes wrong can sour a relationship, which in health and social care, leads to complaints and to disengagement from services. Therefore, making sure each conversation has a positive impact on the relationship is vital, particularly for those who need care the most. There is little known about how conversations impact how a relationship develops over time. This project is designed to identify the features of conversations that are found in good relationships. Understanding how relationships unfold between clients and providers โ€“ from first meeting until the end of the clientโ€™s care โ€“ will help make conversations between service providers and clients better. This knowledge will help anyone who is involved in service provision, as a client or a provider, to have more meaningful conversations and build better relationships. This project involves developing new strategies and tools for research, helping future researchers to analyse how relationships are developed through conversations in any other setting. The research outcomes will be shared with policymakers and professional organisations, and through social media, to help improve conversations in social and health care services. This will make services more trustworthy and more efficient.

I had reason to revisit my 2025 ARC Fellowship application. It was not awarded and that's a bit sad becuase I still reckon it would have been a cool project.

Who trains cold callers to keep speaking when a person has clearly closed the conversation? We need to talk.

Iโ€™ve seen muppet beauty and beast suggested where the beast is the human actor that turns into a muppet at the end. This would be my favourite movie.
