A good cover is almost non-negotiable for me (though I'll take a badly photoshopped cover with hideous font choices over the 'prettiest' looking AI any day.)
I wouldn't trust a store or restaurant with a cardboard sign written in crayon. A good cover tells me you care about your book and readers.
I don't need a book to be popular, I love small press and indie authors and I know how hard it is to get a single book to stand out in a sea of others. But hearing from at least one person whose taste I trust will move a book much higher on my priority list.
Book marketing that works best with me:
- A recommendation from a friend who knows my reading tastes
- Great cover art that matches the tone of the book (made by an actual human)
- A compelling premise, whether it's wildly original or a fun new take on a favorite concept or trope

I will say that I do NOT like the whole 'file the serial numbers off a fanfic and publish it, but still market it as very obvious fanfic'
I love fanfic. I encourage writing it! But if you're getting paid to write a book, make your own. And publishers should know better.
I know things like trope maps are a hot topic for discourse right now, but I think they're fine. 🤷🏾♀️
They're fun and helpful if done well, but they can't be your only marketing.
It's a hook, so once you've got my attention, I need a more substantial summary.
The top things that immediately turn me away from a book are:
- Using AI
- When someone constantly markets their own work, but never seems to uplift anyone else's
- Pity marketing and/or punching down on other authors
- When the back of a book is just pull quotes and not a summary
