A Founding Father of NPR Worries About Its Fate

As Congress debates whether to pull back all federal funds it has already committed to public broadcasting, NPR and PBS station officials in rural areas are watching closely.

“It’s quite easy and sometimes pleasant to enjoy people’s company by ignoring everything you know about them that doesn’t affect you directly” is quite a thin reed on which to hang a whole press tour, in part because literally everybody knows this.

Reminder that the federal funding NPR directly receives mostly supports the Public Radio Satellite System, which reaches nearly 400 stations to transmit emergency messages in the event of a nationwide crisis.

The rest backs the safety & security of journalists in war zones, including in Ukraine.

Please know that those of us who remain are going to do our damnedest to ensure that our listeners are informed and our leaders held accountable
