Regarding the corked bat, MLB immediately collected 76 of his bats after the incident. They were X-rayed, and each one was cork-free. We went to games where Sosa regularly cranks balls out of the park during batting practice. Fans loved it. It was more a crowd-pleasing exhibition than actual BP.

And as much as steroids and other substances influenced the game during the Sosa/Bonds/McGuire era, every MLB owner and every sports TV executive knew what was happening and looked the other way—and then became all pure and angelic after the Congressional hearings.

Sammy Sosa was one of the best reasons to follow the Cubs during the 1990s. He deserves to have his jersey retired—and the statue outside Wrigley. As far as the Hall of Fame goes, that's up to the voters, especially those who put in guys who were admitted users of amphetamines in the 1970s and 80s.

Even more surprising since Republicans think anything even the least bit academic is an affront to their patriotism. And in another language? Blasphemy!

Apparently, all it takes to earn their unwavering devotion and complete subservience is $277 million and a few hundred tweets about being “woke.” Truly inspiring patriotism.
