3/ Our joint ethnography problematises widespread assumptions about the desirability of such gender pedagogies. It revises theorisations of 'hegemonic masculinity' in gender studies, and it highlights the importance of Christianity in forging a hegemonic masculine ideal in Germany.

2/ We argue that such pedagogical projects
- perpetuate Orientalist hierarchies
- reinforce the subjection of women to a supposedly 'benevolent' European patriarchy
- demand that Muslim men repudiate Islam and convert to a Christian masculine ideal
