the extremely boring and simple and “we told you so” explanation is the post financial crisis austerity binge in which european institutions declared fiscal ‘discipline’ more important than democracy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Perhaps I just don't respect people who try to triangulate liberal values with supporting a state that can only function through means of exclusion. If SB thought about this for a few more steps, perhaps he'd realise at best, he's calling for a 'non violent' form of exclusionary ethno politics

Israel seems more important — and less desirable — than ever for British Jews Amid rising antisemitism at home, our lifeboat abroad seems less attractive

No interest really beefing with the guy, but have the people who are praising this piece actually read it ?https://www.ft.com/content/14d49f44-b8ed-40f0-8bc0-6aa233a48c3b

I don’t think you get to call something an “insurance policy” if you demand that someone else pay the, apparently limitless, bloody price for it. What you have then is something much much uglier

I've never considered myself particularly religious, but I've become increasingly convinced of the truth of a thing we might call a soul; primarily through my reading and study, but also from being made to bear witness to the behaviours of people whose have clearly deposed and abandoned their own.

Labour, Tories and the Farageists, representing a combined 525 out of 650 seats in the HoC and 66% of current public voting intention, all locked in a hysterical arms race to win the Send Them Back vote, relentlessly egged on by the gutter press. A self-reinforcing dynamic now utterly out of control

Tories to pledge to create immigration taskforce modelled on Trump’s Ice Proposed ‘removals force’ will be tasked with deporting 150,000 people a year in bid to tackle illegal immigration

ICE is the Sturmabteilung of Trumpian fascism, characterised by racial profiling, flagrant lawlessness, and sadistic violence. The fact that Badenoch wants that for us is a shocking illustration of just how extreme and sinister her politics are.

Our horror at the genocide in Gaza, at the mass murder of civilians on Oct 7 2023, and at today's atrocity in Manchester, comes in each case from the same, inherent part of our shared humanity. We need to assert that shared humanity as loudly as possible, and in as many practical ways as we can.

Extremely cringe-worthy reporting about yesterday’s mass protest in Berlin. @lisacaspari.bsky.social for Die Zeit contrasts families “happily chanting” with “aggressive activists“ and leftist chants with “angry Arabic“ ones. They sent in the true experts for activism and, it appears, linguistics.

Starmer to end asylum ‘golden ticket’ of resettlement and family reunion rights People granted asylum will have to earn right to invite family in plan charities call ‘straight from populist playbook’

People recognised as refugees fleeing persecution & granted the right to live in the UK to be denied the right to be joined safely by their spouse & children.

This Labour govt is a moral void, a stinking darkness, an empty hollow of cowardice & contempt. #r4today www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

NYT editorial board calls for deradicalizing the surviving Palestinians in Gaza
The multinational authority should have an ambitious agenda. It would span the restoration of basic services, the feeding of the population, the reconstruction of neighborhoods and the creation of a police force.
Crucially, as experts at the Wilson Center in Washington have argued, this authority should create a program in schools, the media and elsewhere "to remove Hamas's pervasive radicalizing influence over Gazan society." Another task would be disarming any Hamas fighters who keep fighting. Qatar, given its longtime relationship with Hamas, can help pressure the group, much as the United States can pressure Israel.
There are historical antecedents for an international mission along these lines. Deradicalization programs succeeded in Germany and Japan after World War II, and multinational police forces have operated in Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti and elsewhere. Of course, these efforts come with dangers. Participating countries would risk having their personnel become targets for Hamas. But

Sitting in a makeshift classroom listening to a 24 year old American politics graduate explaining that you’re wrong to be upset about your fascist neighbour bombing and starving you for two years, dynamiting and bulldozing every school, house, shop, civic and religious building you’ve ever seen

I also think Klein is emphasising the “persuasion is good” side of his original article in order to distance himself (without having the honesty or insight to be clear about it) from the “CK is my model of how to do this” bit which was actually the key thrust of it.

Klein acts (with his usual high handed arrogance) like the by now very familiar and unoriginal view that “dems should engage with people who don’t agree” is somehow the same as “this specific bigoted performer is exactly the model of what we should emulate”

Even fucking Germany doesn’t have a rule like this. Things like volunteering (or other indicators of exceptional ‘integration’) are positive criteria which allows an accelerated track for citizenship. Starmer’s Labour are surely the most right wing legacy soc-dem party in the whole of Europe

Like, “whatever words” one uses to describe a crime is quite important. in another context, is it GBH or murder? Not a trivial question
